Several people take first aid training without proper awareness, most obtain a first aid training certificate for employment reasons. But whatever your objectives may be, remember that it always pays to have a certificate as these skills can save a person’s life and they cannot be learns during an emergency. With basic first aid training you can help someone regain consciousness, resume breathing, nurse small wounds and stop bleeding. These may seem small acts but they have a greatly influence the safety of a person’s life. There are some basic steps to be followed in case of an emergency, first aid training prepares you to handle them.

The first step is assessing the situation. In case of fire, toxic smoke or chemical spills stay away as surely you don’t want to be the next victim. The second step is to know the A, B, C- A for airway, B breathing and C for circulation. Check the airway of a victim; this will help you understand more about the situation. Next check if he/she is breathing and last feel the pulse of the victim. Next is moving the injured person- it is advised not to move the person as this might aggravate the injury. While you take care of the person send someone to call for medical help.

The next step will be using the skills learns from your first aid training class. Try to talk to the victim and find out more about him/her. If he/she is unconscious try to regain her consciousness, also check if he/she is breathing. The best way to determine it is to watch for any kind of chest movement, you can also listen for breathing sounds by placing your ear close to the victim’s nose and mouth. Check is the person is bleeding or not. If there is bleeding then try to prevent it in an appropriate manner. Frequently check the pulse to determine the circulation, the best place to do so is to check the carotid artery. You can find it on either side of the neck and below the jawbone. The last step is to stay with the victim, this is highly important. Stay with the victim until medical help arrives; one medical help has arrived give them the information you have collected about the patient.

First aid training is vital in saving a human life. Attending a first aid training class means taking the responsibility of saving lives so whenever someone is hurt near you, you should help them as your help can mean life or death.
